South Coast Repertory Sets Reading Of EURAKA DAY By Jonathan Spector

The first of three Monday evening new-play readings at South Coast Repertory for the 2018-19 season will be Eureka Day by Jonathan Spector. The NewSCRipts reading on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m., is directed by Jennifer Chambers. Tickets are available at www.scr.org.

The story is set at Eureka Day School in Berkeley, Calif., where all decisions are made by consensus; diversity of opinion is valued, and vaccinations are a personal matter. When a mumps outbreak hit the school, it turns out that not everyone in the community has the same definition of social justice. Now the board of directors must confront the central question of our time: how to find consensus when you can't agree on the facts?

Spector is a playwright and theatre-maker based in Oakland, Calif. His plays include Eureka Day (Aurora Theater, Berkeley Repertory Theatre) Good. Better. Best. Bested. (Custom Made Theater, San Francisco), This Much I Know (Berkeley Rep's Ground Floor) Adult Swim (PlayGround Festival, San Francisco), and In From The Cold (Just Theater, Berkeley). He has developed work with San Francisco Playhouse, Crowded Fire Theatre, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Aurora Theater, Mugwumpin, The Lark (NYC), Source Theater Festival (Washington, D.C.), Something Marvelous (Chicago) and Stanford's National Center for New Plays. He has received the 2018 Rella Lossy Award, Theatre Bay Area's TITAN award, an Emerging Playwright Award from PlayGround, been a two-time winner of Aurora Theater's Global Age Prize, is a resident playwright at Playwrights Foundation, was nominated for the 2018 Stavis Playwright Award, and was recently listed by San Francisco Magazine as one of '100 Artists Putting the East Bay on the Map." Spector is co-artistic director of the Berkeley-based Just Theater, where he has produced and/or directed many award-winning plays by writers including Anne Washburn, Jackie Sibblies Drury and Rob Handel.

SCR Literary Director Kimberly Colburn is the dramaturg.
