PRESS RELEASE:
After 15 years of wanting to tackle Richard Condon's incredible political thriller, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, Maverick Theater owner and artistic director Brian Newell is ready. The staging, Newell said, is "unique but simple": 16 performers on a revolving stage, complemented by some additional video footage. Newell said that rather than update the story (such as the 2004 Denzel Washington remake), his staging sticks closely to Condon's novel, which was written during the Korean War.THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is a story about the son of a prominent right-wing political family who has been brainwashed as an unwitting assassin for an international Communist conspiracy. "The script is so intriguing and offers us a great glimpse of the 'McCarthy' era during the Cold War," says Newell. "Audiences will also be seeing some groundbreaking staging here at The Maverick." Newell said he'll be using the same 'staged cinema' approach on THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE as he has on many of his past productions, such as "Night of the Living Dead," "The King" and "Frankenstein, The Prometheus Experiment."Whether you've got past experience writing about theater or just starting, the BroadwayWorld Community offers a unique opportunity to become a champion for your local arts community, helping raise awareness of local offerings and adding another local voice to the conversation at a time arts coverage is shrinking in the press across the continent.
