On November 6, The Sherman Playhouse will stage the world premiere of SEE DICK..., a sharp new tale by playwright B. Peter Hughes. The show opens at 8 p.m. for a four-weekend run.

SEE DICK... finds Jack (Aaron Kaplan, Danbury), a thirty-something facing a professional life, a private life, and a love life that leave much to be desired. In fact, they leave everything to be desired. Life's just not what Jack imagined it would be. And now Jack has to deal with Dick (James Hipp, Danbury), an old friend from his childhood. There's only one small problem: Dick was his imaginary friend.

"It's always exciting to be a part of a new work and this new work is one that audiences will hopefully find hysterical," said director Joseph Russo of New Milford. "This is a fresh, contemporary take on a classic theme and is one everyone can certainly relate to. After all, if we didn't have an imaginary friend ourselves, we almost certainly knew someone who did."

"Researchers suggest that two out of three children have had at least one imaginary friend...that means that two out of three adults have had at least one also," said playwright B. Peter Hughes of New Milford. "In fact, current thought suggests these early childhood pals can be developmental assets...serving as confidant, scapegoat, and inspiration. Most move on before puberty. However, some are handed down sibling to sibling. Now of course I'd prefer if there were no empty theater seats, but if you happen to have one next to you, think again."

Rounding out the cast is Quinn Uniacke (Sherman) and Katya Collazo (Manchester).

Director Russo is also performing the duties of set and costume designer. The production crew also includes producer Tracy Hurd (Brookfield), lighting designer Peter Petrino (Danbury), carpentry by B & L Construction (West Cornwall), and stage management by Laura Gilbert (West Cornwall).

Playwright Hughes was most recently represented on the area stage by 2005's critically acclaimed production of "Ghost of a Chance." Previous Connecticut productions include successful stage adaptations of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "Frankenstein." Growing up in and around New York City afforded Hughes theatrical opportunities, such as acting, directing, puppet design and performance, choreographing and teaching, and set and scenic design. While the majority of his work occurred Off-Broadway and Off-Off Broadway, there were periodic visits uptown. As well as enjoying professional associations with a number of performers, producers and playwrights, Hughes had the privilege of lending some of the latter a hand and an occasional word or two.
SEE DICK... runs November 6,7 13,14, 20,21 December 4,5. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. Fridays & Saturdays, with a 2:00 p.m. Sunday matinee on November 15. Tickets for all shows are $20 for general seating.
