The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra plays The Jorgensen

By:

The Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra is regularly heard throughout Russia on radio, television and film. On Thursday, February 18 at 8 pm, this exceptional orchestra will present a Gala of Russian Composers at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts.

Founded in 1978 as an outgrowth of the need for the symphonic repertoire of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, the Moscow State Radio Symphony Orchestra follows the European music tradition and does not have a permanent Chief Conductor. Maestros from Russia and abroad come to conduct and enhance its development, resulting in fresh, vibrant performances that have engaged audiences in Europe, the Far East, and the U.S., as well as at home. The Palm Beach Daily News said recently, "From the first notes" their performance was "an evening of wonderfully played music."

Under the skilled musical direction of Alexei Kornienko, the Orchestra plays with "boldly articulated bravura" according to the Los Angeles Times. Maestro Kornienko's musical drive is rooted in a strong sense of loyalty to the composer's intentions within the score as well as in a modern responsibility to interpret and demonstrate his individuality. This dedication results in the composer's vision lingering long after the Orchestra's expressive, beautifully-toned performance.

The Jorgensen program will include the Tsar's Bride Overture and Scheherazade Symphonic Suite for Orchestra, Op. 35, by Rimsky-Korsakov; Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, by Rachmaninov, featuring pianist Alexander Sinchuk, First Prize Winner of the 2009 Rachmaninov International Piano Competition; and Tchaikovsky‘s Variations on a Rococo Theme in A major for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 33, with noted cellist Julian Schwarz.

Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts is located at 2132 Hillside Road on the UConn campus in Storrs. Regular tickets are $33, $37, and $40, with some discounts available. For tickets and information, call the Box Office at 860.486.4226 or order online at jorgensen.uconn.edu. Enjoy convenient, free parking across the street in the North Garage.
