Postcards, Knots, And Picture Books Come To The Custom House Maritime Museum July & August

Tuesday, July 7, 6 to 7:30 pm: First Tuesday Heritage Workshop, A History of American Postcards with collector J.D. Diaz-Saavedra. JD will discuss and show examples from his collection of New London postcards illustrating the evolution of eight different eras of American postcards, from the 1890s to the present. Tickets are $10; $8 for members and for pre-registrations before July 3, Call 447-2501 to register.

In conjunction with his talk, JD has assembled a special display: 53 Postcards of New London Harbor Light, which will remain on view through September.

Children's Book Illustration Workshop, with Jon Buller. (rescheduled) Four Wednesdays: July 8, 15, 29, August 5, 6:30-8:30pm. Whether working to produce a book for your grandchildren or a portfolio to submit to a major publisher, you can hoNe Your illustration skills at this four-session workshop. The goal is to complete a book dummy (picture/text layout of the story with rough sketches). You may illustrate your own idea or illustrate a classic nursery rhyme. Fee: $60, $50 for New London Maritime Society members.

Jon Buller, a graphic novelist, is the author and/or illustrator of 53 books, including Snug House, Bug House!.

Creating a Graphic Novel Cartooning Camp, with Jon Buller. July 13 through 16, 10 am to 12 noon. Ages 8 to 16. Learn the basics of cartooning and create your own 4-panel graphic novel. Fee: $45. New exhibition on view through August: Knots & Fancy Ropework: Alton C. Beaudoin - Master of Knots - A knowledge of knots once proved a sailor's worth. See elaborate knot boards, (based on Ashley's Book of Knots), and other fancy knot work by a true master knotter, the late Alton C. Beaudoin, a former boxer and member of the Merchant Marine who lived in Mystic.

New exhibition- on view through July 19: The Parade: Gateway to New London. This new exhibition illustrates the development of New London's Parade, an area currently under construction at the junction of State & Bank Streets.

Contributors include Susan Devlin, Sam Gardner (architect for the renovation), Richard Gipstein, R.A., Robert Hauschild, Ted Hendrickson, Lyman Allyn Museum of Art, New London Landmarks, Public Library of New London, John Ruddy, Clark van der Lyke. We now charge admission - but not for members.

The Custom House Maritime Museum is FREE for everyone on Sundays, and always FREE for current members and children under age 18, but beginning Friday, June 26, all others will pay a $5 admission fee.

Join the New London Maritime Society & your admission is FREE everyday! Individual membership - $25 per year, Family membership - $35, Contributor - $50, Sponsor - $100.
