Curtain Call in Stamford will present a concert reading of Hiraeth by local playwright E. Kyle Minor on Monday, May 4 at 7:30 pm. The performance is free and held in Curtain Call's Dressing Room Theatre.

Hiraeth, set in the Silvermine community where Norwalk, New Canaan and Wilton meet, takes place on a seasonably beautiful, autumn afternoon. The play begins breezily enough when Tommy returns to his childhood home after more than a 30-year absence. Sara, who currently lives there with her husband and two young children, peppers Tommy with questions about various curiosities of the house, yard and neighborhood. As Tommy shares his memories, he unwittingly unearths unresolved terrors and his visit goes tragically awry.

Hiraeth deals with such themes as nostalgia, mental illness and, ultimately, profound loss.

John Atkin directs a local cast featuring Bruce Crilly, Victoria Clougher, Bill King and Savannah Hall.

Minor, who grew up in Silvermine, has several original plays and adaptations to his credit that have been performed in New York City, Connecticut and throughout New England. As a freelance theater critic and features writer, Minor has covered the performing arts for the NY Times, New Haven Register, Stamford Advocate and several other publications throughout Connecticut and Westchester County, NY. Minor earned his MFA in Dramatic Writing from Brandeis University.

"I'm delighted to present Hiraeth at Curtain Call," said Minor, who has developed his play through previous readings at Wilton Playshop and Brookfield Theater for the Arts, "and I'm honored to work with John and our talented and accomplished cast.

"It's vital to the growth of the work," added Minor, "to hear this revision before a live audience to see what lands and what doesn't."

Monday's concert reading is open to the public and free. There will be a brief talkback with the playwright, director and cast following the reading.

Theatergoers are encouraged to reserve their seats online at curtaincallinc.com or by calling the Box Office at 203-461-6358. The Dressing Room Theatre is located at the Sterling Farms Theatre Complex, 1349 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT.
