It's 1960 and Lorenzo Anello (De Niro), an Italian-American bus driver, lives in the Bronx with his wife Rosina (Katherine Narducci) and young son Calogero (Francis Capra), who is fascinated with the local mobsters led by Sonny (Chazz Palminteri), a neighborhood wiseguy. When Calogero gets involved with said mobsters, Lorenzo steps in and puts a stop to it - but eight years later discovers his son has been collaborating with Sonny behind his back. Calogero (now called "C", played by Lillo Brancato) is confronted by his father and storms out. Though he idolizes Sonny, C loves and respects his decent, honest father. It takes a major tragedy for C to choose his true course in life.
