Life is a Cabaret at Chestnut Street Playhouse
Chestnut Street Playhouse presents CABARET by Joe Masteroff,; opening August 11.
Local director David Fenn takes the helm of this multi Tony Award winning musical, bringing the oasis from the overwhelming politically charged world to the Norwich stage. Based on Christopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories, CABARET tells the interwoven stories of a cabaret singer, an American writer, and the citizens of Berlin as the Nazi party storms into power around them. Led by the omniscient Emcee, CABARET features well known classics such as "Don't Tell Mama", "Maybe This Time", and of course, "Cabaret".
"I love Fosse," director David Fenn says about heading the production. "He's in the compendium of saints for me, though I'm sure he wouldn't know a saint it he met one.
"I wanted to do this show 20 years ago; then 18 years ago I saw Sam Mendes' production on Broadway with Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson and I thought...I can't do this show. Mendes did it right.
Flash forward to 2016... and a demagogue in our midst yet again, and again, here. on our soil and I thought.... I can do this show now. It means something different now, and potentially more terrifyingly so."
"It is so simple to go along with what is wrong if somehow, a morsel of it seems right," Fenn also notes. "Given current politics this musical is like an a-bomb of reality. See it."
CABARET features Emilio Guzman as the Emcee, Jennifer MacPherson as Sally Bowles, Jason Sedgewick as Clifford Bradshaw, Angela Dias as Fraulein Schneider and Justin Carroll as Herr Schultz. CABARET also features Amanda Nelson, Andrew Goehring, Barbara Schrerer, Brandon Gregoire, Debra Lynn Slezak, Emily Elsemore, Heather Spiegal Auden, & Kristine Rizzi. Joni Gage is the musical director; Brandon Gregoire choreographs.
CABARET runs through August 28th, 2016.
Tickets are $25 and available by calling the box office at 860.886.2378
