John T. Plillips II Hosts Lecture & Heritage Workshop at New London Maritime

The New London Maritime Society (Custom House Maritime Museum) Annual Meeting will feature a talk by historian John T. Phillips II: LIGHTHOUSES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION ~ updating our history.

The general wisdom on American lighthouse history has held out about a dozen lighthouses as the first American lights. In his research for a book on the subject, John Phillips has "discovered" records of another dozen lighthouses that were important for merchants and seaborne combatants in our Revolution. More recently, John turned his attention to the history of the Harbor lighthouse at New London, and his research, still in progress, is turning up interesting new views of New London history. Prepare to be surprised.

John's talk will be followed by the annual business meeting for the society.

The Annual Meeting will be held Sunday, November 13, from 2 to 4 PM. Cookies and tea will be served. The Meeting is FREE for NLMS members, $8 donation from all others.

While here, researching in Connecticut, John also will offer a special heritage workshop at the Custom House Maritime Museum.
Researching Historic Properties
This short course will introduce participants to various methods for locating and using public records in documenting historic structures, including but not limited to our Harbor Lighthouse. Individuals who have an interest in assisting John Phillips in his research on the colonial records of our Harbor Lighthouse will have preference, if space is limited.
Areas of discussion will include:
~ Historic properties
~ Identifying and using primary sources
~ Family histories, and other topics of interest
While faculty at the University of Virginia, John Phillips created and taught a series of graduate seminars for public school teachers with the goal of improving the use of primary source materials on American history in k-12 classrooms.
