Disney's THE LION KING continues to reign across North America with a sold-out engagement in Cleveland, which concluded on Sunday, August 4 at the State Theatre. The triumphant four-week return grossed over $6.3 million at the box office and entertained more than 93,000 patrons during 32 performances. This was THE LION KING's third engagement in Cleveland, following an eight-week sold-out premiere in 2003, and a successful six-week run in 2007 at the State Theatre.

The landmark musical celebrated two momentous tour milestones during the Cleveland run, with the Gazelle tour playing its 100th engagement and the total North American touring box office of The Lion King exceeding $1 billion.

It is estimated that the Cleveland engagement of THE LION KING generated a $22 million economic benefit to the city from travel, hotels, restaurants, parking and other businesses patronized by both theatergoers and production staff. This figure is based upon a Touring Broadway League report which found that, on average, Broadway tours contribute an economic impact 3.5 times the gross ticket sales to the local metropolitan area's economy.

"In addition to a great experience for our guests, this successful engagement during the summer months helped to maintain our not-for-profit mission of stimulating the local economy and bringing customers to our restaurants and businesses," stated Art J. Falco, President and CEO of PlayhouseSquare.
