The New Group, one of New York?s leading Off-Broadway theaters, is seeking an Artistic Fellow. The New Group is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporarytheater. In addition to producing four annual productions, the organization?s New Group/New Works play and musical development program champions original works by emerging and established authors. The New Group also operates avariety of theater education programs that provide opportunities for artistically inclined high school, college and adult students.New Group Next Fellowships are full-time paid appointments and are designed to train candidates from underrepresented communities in the New York theatre industry who have had limited or no access to arts training.In addition to the specific fellowship description below, the Artistic Fellow will become part of The New Group team in the following ways in order to expand the breadth of their understanding of how a non-profit theatre operates:? Participate in weekly departmental and staff meetings? Attend and provide event support for Opening Nights, fundraising benefits and other special events? Invitations to one-on-one sessions with senior staff members to gain perspective in other aspects of the organization? Additional mentorship and coaching by Founding Artistic Director Scott Elliott and Executive Director Adam Bernstein? Resume guidance, job search strategies and interview preparation? Introductions to external industry networks in chosen fields to help cultivate relationships for future employment opportunitiesThe Artistic Fellow will work directly with the Associate Artistic Director to gain experience in all aspects of the artistic work of The New Group, with an emphasis on play development. Theater companies are defined by and revolve aroundthe art they produce. The New Group takes pride in the innovative and bold work we present, work that the Artistic Department is tasked with curating and developing. The artistic team seeks out new projects and collaborators, andthen submitted works are evaluated to determine whether they are the right fit for The New Group and ready for a developmental process. The Fellow will learn to identify prospective plays, read and evaluate the writing effectively, andcommunicate with authors about their work. They will also assist in the development of new plays and musicals, from initial meetings to workshops to production, and engage in discussions with the Artistic Staff.Over the course of the fellowship, this position will include the following training:? Request and evaluate scripts? Communicate with agents and playwrights? Track status of submissions to Artistic Department and attendant correspondence? Lead efforts to produce New Group/No Limits, a play development series for new and unexpected work byplaywrights of color, curated by playwright Thomas Bradshaw? Attend meetings and rehearsals for New Group productions to become familiar with the next step in play andmusical development? Coordinate audition sessions and liaise with casting director and actor agents? Learn to share feedback with playwrights and directorsThroughout the fellowship period, there will be an ongoing evaluation process to determine appropriate areas for growth and outline future goals. At the end of the fellowship, it is The New Group?s intention that the fellows will havegained skills and experience that will make them competitive candidates for future employment in New York?s theatrical workforce.Fellowship compensation is $15 per hour for a 40-hour week plus a local Metrocard.
