CCM's 2010-2011 Season to Include NIGHT MUSIC, THREE SISTERS, et al

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is pleased to announce details for the 2010-11 CCM Studio Series of opera, musical theatre and drama. This year's Studio Series features seven productions in CCM's intimate and versatile "black box" space, the Cohen Family Studio Theater, along with a special Studio Series opera produced in Patricia Corbett Theater and a festival of new dramatic works that will utilize spaces throughout CCM Village.

The Studio Series runs from Oct. 21, 2010 through May 29, 2011. All Studio Series events held in CCM's Cohen Family Studio Theater are free and open to the general public, although reservations are required. Under Construction II

Conceived and Choreographed by Diane Lala

Under Construction II explores aspects of love, separation, temptation, deceit, desire and discovery through dance, music and theatricality. A new "musical" by choreographer Diane Lala, the work employs a variety of dance styles set to selections by Peter Gabriel, John Williams, Peter Frampton and others to capture the ever-evolving nature of human passion. "Constructed" with creative input from the performers, the choreographer aims to translate ideas and emotions common to us all into dazzling three-dimensional form.

Three Sisters

The decay of the privileged class in Russia and the search for meaning in the modern world is the subject of Chekhov's influential play, Three Sisters. Olga, Masha and Irina are refined and cultured young women who were raised in urban Moscow but have been living in a small, colorless Russian provincial town for eleven years. With their father dead, their hopes lie heavily in their anticipated return to Moscow, while the painful monotony of day-to-day living exacts its toll.

The Turn of the Screw (1954)

Based on Henry James' classic ghost-story novella, Britten's compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle's country estate, where the ghosts of a former abusive valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. Sung in English with supertitles.

A Little Night Music

Based on Ingmar Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night, this lyrical Tony Award-winning masterpiece is set at a country house in Sweden at the turn-of-the-century. Witty and urbane, A Little Night Music fully captures the intricacies of love's endless possibilities in haunting three-quarter time.

TRANSMIGRATION: A Festival of Student Created New Works
 
TRANSMIGRATION, so named for "the movement from one place to another" or "the transition from one state of being to another," is a festival of new works created by the acting students in CCM Drama. Performed simultaneously in different locations throughout CCM Village, TRANSMIGRATION will allow the audience to sample four different 30-minute new works of their choosing in one spectacular evening. Recognized by CityBeat with a Best AlterNative Theatre Cincinnati Entertainment Award nomination.

L'le De Tulipatan

Set on the Island of Tulipatan, Théodorine has raised her son as a girl named Hermosa to rescue him from military conscription, while Duke Cacatois'daughter, lacking a male heir to the throne, has been brought up as a boy named Alexis. Unknowingly, the pair fall in love and plan to wed, even after the cross-gender role-playing comes to light. Offenbach sets Chivot and Duru's original French libretto to a deliriously delightful one-act operetta, filled with uproarious calamity and endless hilarity. Sung in French with English supertitles.

Red Light Winter

Musicals Redux: Out of This World

Continuing our mission to resurrect gems from the storehouse of forgotten American musical theatre, Musicals Redux presents a stylish comic gem from the master, Cole Porter. A free adaption of Amphitryon by Plautus, Out of This World pits Roman gods and goddesses against each other with amusing results. Erudite and polished, the complicated plot-twists are all set to the timeless sophistication of a Porter score. Featuring the hit song, "From This Moment On," Out of This World has seldom been seen since its Broadway debut in 1952.

Embroiled in bitter struggle for control of the Roman and Egyptian worlds, Giulio Cesare recounts the passion between Cesare and Cleopatra as they form an alliance against the Egyptian queen's brother and co-ruler, Tolomeo. With all of the historical backing, Handel's tragic opera boasts themes of warfare, passionate love, betrayal and heroic action brought to lyric drama on an epic scale. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.
