Rachel in Iraq: A Mother's Story @ Village Players

By: May. 27, 2008
Village Players Performing Arts Center Presents:
Rachel in Iraq: A Mother's Story
An Evening of Storytelling starring Beth Horner

A path-cutter in America's Storytelling Renaissance. A National Storytelling Network's Circle of Excellence Award Winner. An American Favorite at Storytelling Festivals across the country.

Beth Horner is noted for her vivacious stage presence, comic sensibility, and warm, energetic style punctuated with autoharp, kazoo, and a prize-winning smile. Horner's work is renowned for its range, depth, and humor. Her telling is a constellation of warmth, wit, and heartfelt truth.

Rachel in Iraq: A Mother's Story
is an important contemporary work. From a random meeting with a mother in a grocery store, Beth was commissioned to carry forth this story of courage and love culled from Rachel's letters home. It gives face and honor to young women fighting in Iraq.

Beth Horner is known for providing an entertaining and empowering experience for her listeners, young and old. Her performances captivate audiences with a wide variety of folk, literary, traditional, contemporary and original tales from around the world. Horner's lively, traditional storytelling style often incorporates music, creating a unique performance which critics have called "dynamite!" Beth's goal as a storyteller is to entertain and to encourage her listeners to dip into the wealth of their own imaginations.

"When you watch a story on television or in a movie theater, you see one person's depiction of an image - of a monster, a prince or an enraged tiger eating a buffalo chip! When you hear a story, you create that image yourself. When I'm telling stories to 50 different people, there are 50 different movies going on in the minds of listeners. Nothing is as powerful or vivid as your own imagination," says Horner.
