Los Improviachis to Perform at Crown Point Community Theatre, 8/23

Crown Point, Indiana is known for incarcerating famous gangsters (John Dillinger), being the center point of movies (Public Enemies, a movie about Dillinger, was shot there), and for being a former "marriage mill" (no, Dillinger was not married there). One thing that isn't known is the variety of programming Crown Point Community Theatre is producing. CPCT is going to throw another comedic fiesta by hosting Los Improviachis, the world's only improvised mariachi band, on Saturday August 16th starting at 8 PM at 1125 Merrillville Road.

Los Improviachis is the musical improvisation arm of Salsation Theatre Company, Chicago longest running Latino comedy company of 15 years specializing in improvisation and sketch comedy. "We're incredibly excited to have been invited back by CPCT," exclaims Nelson Velazquez, Salsation's Artistic Director and lead musical director for Los Improviachis. "We had such a great couple of shows back in February that we couldn't wait to play another show. It was great to see Latino and non-Latinos alike enjoying what we had to offer. Not many people have been exposed to improvisational theatre before let alone musical improv. Exposing mariachi music and culture to the masses in a comedic way is our goal," he adds.

Crown Point Community Theatre, now in their 11th year, is well known in northwest Indiana for the many plays and musicals they perform every season. Board President Joe Culley feels that, "having Salsation back is a great thing! We sold out the last shows we had with them out and our audiences were thrilled having them here. We showed the northwest Indiana area that CPCT is more than just plays and musicals. We're about community. We connected with our supporters and continue to look for new opportunities to do so in our diverse programming."

Background: Salsation was created in 1998 and became a non-for-profit theatre company in 2002. Cast members range from Brazilian, European, Mexican, and Puerto Rican backgrounds.
