In this landmark musical, an author named Miguel de Cervantes has been arrested and thrown into a dungeon to await trial during the Spanish Inquisition. In an attempt to appease his fellow prisoners, he offers a dramatization of his new work, "Don Quixote." the other prisoners are so charmed by Cervantes' tale of the foolish, aging knight and his trusty squire that they become characters in the story, and the murky dungeon is transformed into a stage whereon Cervantes builds a story about chivalry, daring-do, and man's unending quest to better himself. This musical won 5 Tony Awards in 1966 including Best Musical. Written by Dale Wasserman, with music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion.
