The Magnetic Theatre Will Present TRAITOR
How far is too far, when it comes to speaking the truth?
In Brett Neveu's Traitor, eccentric schoolteacher Dr. Tom Stock has discovered a dark secret lurking beneath the charter school that has spurred the revitalization of his hometown, East Lake, Illinois. He believes the campus is contaminated by lead, so with the aid of local press and organizers, he takes up a crusade to expose the scandal, inform the public, and protect the town's children as well as his own son and daughter. Mayor Patty Stock, Tom's sister, finds his claims hyperbolic. She intends to protect her constituents' financial interests, and Tom's allies may just find her arguments the more persuasive of the two.
In this modern adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People, the opposing sides battle it out in the court of public opinion. Part interpersonal drama, part hilarious, quirky satire, Traitor exposes how sometimes the human element might be the most toxic of all. Prejudices, priorities, and motives are called into question and characters' true colors revealed as East Lake wrestles with truths that threaten to tear the Stock family, and the entire town, apart.
Synopsis: This modern adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's An Enemy of the People follows the fate of a small suburb and its newly opened charter school. The science teacher, Dr. Stock, discovers issues on the school grounds and takes on a mission to inform the public. Both hilarious and heartbreaking, this play addresses themes of truth, greed and denial, while serving as a mirror for our outrageous political reality.
