SPRING AWAKENING To Be Presented By Asheville Musical Theatre

Asheville Musical Theatre will present Spring Awakening, the groundbreaking Tony Award-winning rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and book and lyrics by Steven Sater, running June 25-28, 2026, at the Diana Wortham Theatre in downtown Asheville.

Based on Frank Wedekind's controversial 1891 play, Spring Awakening follows a group of young people navigating the challenges of identity, sexuality, and mental health, in a world that refuses to answer their questions. Featuring a powerful contemporary rock score and deeply human storytelling, the musical remains as relevant today as when it first premiered on Broadway twenty years ago.

Produced by Asheville Musical Theatre, a queer-led nonprofit organization dedicated to creating bold, accessible musical theatre in Western North Carolina, this production explores the timeless struggle of young people searching for connection, understanding, and hope. Though set in late nineteenth-century Germany, the musical's themes of self-discovery, belonging, and communication continue to resonate deeply with modern audiences.

"At its core, this is a story about the importance of communication, compassion, and allowing young people the space to become who they are, "said Director Ethan Henry. "While the show explores difficult subjects, it also celebrates the beauty, joy, and wonder that come with discovering yourself and finding connection with others."

The production stars Caleb Hector as the outspoken and inquisitive Melchior, opposite Emma-Leigh Brookshire as Wendla, a young woman searching for answers in a world determined to keep them hidden. Maximilian Koger takes on the role of Moritz, whose struggles with expectation and isolation form one of the musical's most heartbreaking storylines.

Joining them are Kirby Gibson as Martha, Kelli Hall as Thea, Reed Atherton as Hanschen, Isabeli Buendia as Anna, Alex Poteat as Ernst, Annabel Pulman as Ilse, Shane Dinan as Georg, and Lucien Hinton as Otto. Richie Barrella and Fancy Marie complete the company as the Adult Man and Adult Woman, portraying the many authority figures who shape, and often complicate, the lives of the show's young protagonists.

The production is directed by Executive Director Ethan Henry, with Zoe Zelonky serving as Assistant Director and Choreographer and Gabrielle Tee as Music Director. Michelle Newman leads the stage management team as Stage Manager alongside Assistant Stage Manager Sara Hassinger. Laura Rikard serves as Intimacy Director, helping to ensure that the show's sensitive and emotionally complex material is approached with care, collaboration, and respect.

Performances will take place  June 24th-28th at the Diana Wortham Theatre located at 18 Biltmore Avenue Asheville, NC. Tickets are available through the Wortham Arts website.

Please Note: Spring Awakening contains mature themes, including sexual content, strong language, depictions of abuse, and discussions of suicide. The production is recommended for audiences ages 16 and older.
