Letters from Max, by Pulitzer finalist Sarah Ruhl, is an intimate autobiographical play adapted from her 2018 book written with poet Max Ritvo. The play traces the relationship between Sarah and Max, her former student, as he faces terminal illness at age 25, told through the letters and poems they exchanged. With humor, lyricism, and candor, the work explores art's capacity to hold grief and remembrance. The New York Times called it "warm and literary... a theatrical act of remembrance and a sacrament of grief, but... also a comedy."
