Schott Music Corp & European American Music Distributors Launch PSNY

By: Nov. 01, 2011

Maybe you loved Pierre Jalbert's Icefield Sonnets for string quartet when you heard it in concert and wonder if your ensemble might like to perform it. Or you caught the last five minutes of Lei Liang's Serashi Fragments on the radio and want to get a score. Thinking about an evening of music inspired by spiritual and magical connections and wonder if Andrew Norman's The Companion Guide to Rome or Gabriela Ortiz's Altar de Muertos will fit the bill? Or you loved Timo Andres' Crashing Through Fences and Hannah Lash's Frayed when you heard them at a concert and want to meet the composers online and ask a few questions?

Schott Music Corporation & European American Music Distributors, LLC have made all this and much more possible with its announcement today of the launch of Project Schott New York (PSNY). PSNY is a digital music publishing platform with online space for the discovery, purchase, and discussion of new music. The first of its kind developed by a major music publishing house, PSNY immediately positions Schott as the leader of the next generation in music publishing.

Composers, performers, and music lovers will all play an active role on the PSNY site, a clean storefront with social media integration, where a search for a particular composer yields it all: his/her website, a profile, calendar, repertoire suggestions, program notes, a listening area, videos, reviews, comments, and more. The interactive, media-rich online interface will connect musicians and audiences directly with the creators of new works. In particular, PSNY makes it easy for composers themselves to get involved, giving them the ability to upload and add content and interact with PSNY users. PSNY's homepage will include weekly repertoire and performance highlights, as well as blog posts with targeted suggestions for programmers, producers and performers. Overall, PSNY will be the smartest and most interesting source for new music on the web, launching with a catalog of over 70 new ensemble works by more than 30 of the most exciting emerging and established composers of our time, all available for immediate purchase and download.

Following the launch of the pilot phase of the project, the PSNY catalog will continue to expand with new composers and new works introduced on a regular basis. Some of the many composers participating in the pilot phase include: Timo Andres, Robert Beaser, Richard Carrick, Anthony Cheung, Douglas J. Cuomo, Mario Diaz de León, David Felder, Beat Furrer, Kamran Ince, Pierre Jalbert, Phil Kline, Hannah Lash, Lei Liang, David T. Little, Keeril Makan, Alex Mincek, Andrew Norman, Gabriela Ortiz, Tobias Picker, Matthias Pintscher, Joseph Schwantner, Alvin Singleton, Kate Soper, and Gregory Spears.

As Borromeo String Quartet First Violinist and technology expert Nicholas Kitchen noted, "Schott Music Corporation & European American Music Distributors have demonstrated real vision and innovative energy in taking the first significant steps to bringing music publishing, the digital world, professional musicians, and the listening public together, opening the door to a rich new array of possibilities. This expands and builds upon the already-productive synergy among players, composers, and publishers, strengthening the necessary structure for musical partnerships. Expanding the medium to the readable and changeable form of computer files will amplify the collaboration, and open countless doors for all of us."

Building a digital publishing platform from the ground up and taking full advantage of the technology available reduces overhead and re-directs resources into services that composers and programmers truly value. In addition, PSNY sets the stage for a similar distribution mechanism for larger ensemble and orchestral music in the future. "PSNY was born partly out of a fundamental concern I'd been hearing from composers, conductors and ensembles about the need for a new approach to music publishing outside of the traditional models," said Norman Ryan, Vice President at Schott Music Corp. and European American Music Dist. in New York. "We have seen an explosion of interest in new music, especially from a younger generation of players and listeners, and PSNY is ideally situated to build and enhance connections among creators, performers and audiences. Launching an exclusively digital brand also offers us the opportunity to add new works and new composers much more frequently. It's a tremendous advance for the field of music publishing and one that will engender new avenues of collaboration and partnerships."
