YMCA Camp Thunderbird

YMCA Camp Thunderbird is an American Camp Association-accredited camp operated by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte on a roughly 100-acre site with nearly two miles of Lake Wylie shoreline in South Carolina, about 30 minutes from Charlotte. Offering programs since 1936, the camp marked its 90th anniversary in 2026. Overnight camp serves ages 7-16 in one-, two- and four-week sessions with activities including wakeboarding, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, horseback riding, challenge courses, a zip line and an alpine tower. Outdoor Adventure Day Camp serves ages 6-12 in ten weekly sessions. A multi-year bandana reward system recognizes campers' skill progression, and donor-supported scholarships are available to families who qualify. The camp also hosts retreats and rentals outside the summer season.

Overnight camp serves ages 7-16 with separate girls and boys sessions; Outdoor Adventure Day Camp serves ages 6-12. Registration handled through UltraCamp with YMCA single sign-on. Overnight balances due May 15. Donor-funded camp scholarships available by application.
