It has been 15 years since the release of Peter Jackson’s film masterpiece “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring” in 2001. The fantasy trilogy brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth to life for audiences in a groundbreaking and awe inspiring way. All together the trilogy earned 475 awards across 800 nominations in all award ceremonies worldwide - more than any film series in history. Howard Shore’s beautiful film scores earned him best composer, best original score, and best original song among others.

Now these epic films are being screened again, but this time accompanied by the original score as performed by the FILMharmonique Orchestra and choir. This performance features over 250 Canadian musicians, bringing the iconic sounds of this beloved tale to life. The power of these performances has attracted both die-hard classical fans, as well as film fans discovering the magic of a live orchestra for the first time. The orchestra specializes in film compositions, providing an opportunity for every film fan to find their favourite classics: https://gfnproductions.ca/our-productions/concerts/?city=Calgary

“The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” follows the broken fellowship on their individual journeys while discovering the far reaches of Middle Earth. Audiences will marvel at the majesty of Rohan through the strong brass tones, complimented by the mournful sounds of the Hardanger fiddle (a traditional instrument of Norway). The passage through the marshes is made suspenseful by the tremolo of the strings, undertoning the deceptive nature of Gollum’s path towards Mordor. The marching of the Uruk-Hai is powerfully driven by the pounding percussion and deep brass notes that guide their forward progress with the halflings. The ethereal vocals accompany both the elven appearances as well as the shining beacon of hope that Gandalf represents in his resurrection. This is a performance that is sure to inspire.

I was personally inspired to go into acting and filmmaking as a young adult thanks to this timeless trilogy. Although the films are marketed as the fantasy genre, they go beyond and touch on so many inherently human conditions from friendship and loyalty, to the ultimate corruption of power. In a world that is becoming increasingly focussed on an ‘us vs. them’ mentality, it is so important to remember that we are all united in a desire to be free and it is hope that drives our actions. I know I am looking forward to this performance more than any other this summer and I hope to see you there.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” has toured the world to rave reviews, described as “A magical experience!”, “Perfectly orchestrated!”
