Zombies are getting ready to invade AMC after the cable network ordered six one-hour episodes of 'The Walking Dead,' a sci-fi series based on the Robert Kirkman comic book, reports The Wrap.

AMC asserted itself as a power player in the original series market after its show 'Mad Men' resonated not only with a growing fan base but also with the critics and Television Academy -- 'Mad Men' has won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for its look at the culture of New York's advertising agencies in the 1960s.

Although 'Walking Dead' deals with zombies, the network is adamant that its not only about dead people. "It doesn't do it justice to call it a zombie series," an AMC executive told The Wrap. "It's really a social drama based around a group of survivors."

The new show's producer Gale Ann Hurd told the New York Times, "We're taking our inspiration especially from 'Breaking Bad,' in terms of character stories in a violent world... it is a world in which the zombies outnumber the humans, so I think it's going to be difficult not to."

Jon Bernthal is already cast, following his turn in HBO's current mini-series, 'The Pacific.' 'Walking Dead' will begin airing in October, just in time for the network's Halloween programming, and is set to be filmed in Atlanta, Georgia beginning in June.
