Deadline writes that S. Epatha Merkerson, best known for her long-running role on LAW & ORDER, will star in another series created by Dick Wolfe, NBC's CHICAGO FIRE spin-off CHICAGO MED.

Merkerson will play 'Sharon Goodwin', described as "the head of the hospital where the show is set. Though she doesn't love the politics that go into running a hospital, and though she doesn't suffer fools, Sharon is damn good at keeping the doors open."

She will join Yaya DaCosta, who starred in Lifetime's Whitney Houston biopic, in the cast.

CHICAGO MED is a planted pilot, which will air as part of CHICAGO FIRE's current season (in the 19th episode). CHICAGO FIRE creators/executive producers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt are also writing CHICAGO MED, with executive producers Matt Olmstead and Wolf.

Merkerson starred as 'Lt. Anita Van Buren' in Law & Order for nearly a decade. Since then, she has appeared in the movie Lincoln and the TV series The Good Wife, DECEPTION and more. The actress will next be seen on the big screen in Sexual Healing and The Challenger.

Two-time Tony nominee Merkerson last appeared on Broadway in Come Back, Little Sheba, and before that in The Piano Lesson. She most recently starred off-Broadway in While I Yet Live and has also appeared onstage in Birdie Blue, fing A, Three Ways Home, Balm in Gilead and The Harvesting.
