Variety reports exclusively that Rachel McAdams is "locking down" the female starring role as a cop in the sophomore season of HBO's hit drama TRUE DETECTIVE.

Sources tell the site that the cable network has offered the actress the role in which she would star opposite previously confirmed cast members Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn. Taylor Kitsch is also rumored to be cast in the series.

HBO could not immediately be reached for comment on the report.

Justin Lin will helm the first two episodes of the show's second season, which will once again be penned by show creator Nic Pizzolatto. The series is set in California and follows "three police officers and a career criminal who navigate a web of conspiracy in THE AFTERMATH of a murder."

McAdams is currently filming an untitled project for Cameron Crowe. She will soon be seen on the big screen in 'Southpaw' opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. Her most recent film was 'A Most Wanted Man,' one of the final films from late actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
