NYC-ARTS to Feature Juilliard's Dr. Joseph Polisi This Month

NYC-ARTS, THIRTEEN's weekly arts and culture multi-platform showcase, brings artslovers an all-access pass to the interesting, unusual and unique cultural offerings of the greater New York City region.

On October 26, the series will feature the program's co-host and New York Emmy winner Paula Zahn in conversation with Dr. Joseph Polisi, President of the Juilliard School.

Dr. Polisi will be stepping down from his role as Juilliard's President in the spring of 2018, after a tenure of 34 years, the longest tenure of any leader of the esteemed institution.

One of the most renowned figures in the field of performing arts education, Dr. Polisi transformed many aspects of the Juilliard School, while continuing to advance the school's reputation as one of the world's most respected conservatories. During his tenure, he enriched the student experience by adding the school's first dormitories, added the liberal arts to the curriculum, and most recently expanded the institution globally with the establishment of a campus in China.

"I didn't think I'd last more than a year or two..." Polisi told Zahn. "So thirty years seemed out of the question...I feel it's been important and good work," he added. "Every year [I meet] a new group of extraordinary students - actors, dancers, and musicians who are white hot with passion about what they want to achieve in the arts...it is very restorative."

The conversation also draws on topics from "The Artist as Citizen," a collection of Polisi's essays and other writings, among them the important connection between artistic excellence and social consciousness.

Co-hosted by New York Emmy Award winners Philippe de Montebello and Paula Zahn, with events around town reported by Ha, NYC-ARTS showcases both world-renowned and local, community-based arts organizations.

The program airs on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on THIRTEEN and is also available to stream on NYC-ARTS.org on Friday mornings. Encore presentations generally follow on Sundays at 12 noon on THIRTEEN; Sundays at 3 p.m. and Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. on WLIW21; and Sundays at 8:30 p.m. on NJTV.
