Kristin Chenoweth on Tammy Faye Bakker Musical: 'The Time for Tammy Faye is Right Now'

When will Kristin Chenoweth's Tammy Faye Bakker project finally come to the stage? It's still in the works, the actress says.

In a recent interview on RuPaul: What's the Tee?, a podcast hosted by RuPaul and Michelle Visage, Kristin Chenoweth provided an update on the development of her Tammy Faye Bakker project. She's hinted at the work in progress both in a 2016 interview with the Hollywood Reporter and a 2017 BroadwayWorld interview. Bakker was famed as a Christian singer, evangelist, television personality, and businesswoman, the life of which Chenoweth would like to pay tribute to onstage. The work has yet to come to fruition, but is still in the process, she says.

"We've had a couple scripts," Chenoweth says to RuPaul and Visage. "And they weren't right. And I'm not gonna do it unless it's right." She describes the ideal production as an "intimate evening with Tammy Faye," not so much a flashy biographical musical.

The Tammy Faye project was brought up in the midst of discussing another work in development for Chenoweth: a musical based on the 1992 film Death Becomes Her. "I feel like the time for Tammy Faye is right now," Chenoweth says. "This is a strong woman who lived in a time and was submissive to her husband but yet wanted to spread the love of the Lord and yet wanted to have a good life and wanted to be a great example and had an addiction. I think a lot of women can really understand her."
