Katherine Waterston has officially joined recently announced Josh Brolin in Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's INHERENT VICE, according to Deadline.

Waterston will also act alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short Owen Wilson, and Jena Malone for the film. Sean Penn is also reportedly considering a role.

INHERENT VICE is officially described as: "Part noir, part psychedelic romp, all Thomas Pynchon- private eye Doc Sportello surfaces, occasionally, out of a marijuana haze to watch the end of an era...

It's been a while since Doc Sportello has seen his ex- girlfriend. Suddenly she shows up with a story about a plot to kidnap a billionaire land developer whom she just happens to be in love with. It's the tail end of the psychedelic sixties in L.A., and Doc knows that "love" is another of those words going around at the moment, like "trip" or "groovy," except that this one usually leads to trouble. Undeniably one of the most influential writers at work today, Pynchon has penned another unforgettable book."

Rumors are Waterston will play 'Shasta', the ex-girlfriend of Joaquin Phoenix's character Doc.?

Waterston has appeared onstage in off-Broadway's The Cherry Orchard, Dreams of Flying Dreams of Falling and Kindness. She will next appear on film in The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers, Manhattan Romance, Night Moves, Glass Chin, Fluidic and Red Light Winter. Other film credits include: Taking Woodstock, Michael Clayton, Almost in Love, The Factory, The Letter, Good Dick, The Babysitters and more.

Anderson has helmed such films as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, There Will Be Blood, Hard Eight and Punch-Drunk Love. INHERENT VICE will begin filming this summer for Warner Bros.
