Dwayne Johnson to Star as Hawaiian King Kamehameha in THE KING

Dwayne Johnson has been cast as Hawaiian king Kamehameha in Robert Zemeckis' historical drama "The King" according to Variety.

Randall Wallace's script for "The King" was won in auction by Warner Bros. and New Line.

Johnson will produce the film, about the first ruler of Hawaii, through his Seven Bucks Productions company, along with Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Zemeckis is also producing with Beau Flynn through FlynnPictureCo. The studio plans to shoot the film in 2020.

Kamehameha unified the Hawaiian Islands following a series of battles during the 1790s and took steps to ensure they remained a united realm after his death.

Johnson decided to move forward with the film, which he had been eyeing in recent years, during the filming in Hawaii of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle."
