Brian d'Arcy James and Corey Stoll Join Cast of WEST SIDE STORY Film

Brian d'Arcy James and Corey Stoll have been cast in Fox's Steven Spielberg West Side Story film, according to Deadline.

Brian d'Arcy James is set to play the iconic role of Sergeant Krupke, the vet cop whose beat included the territories of two warring street gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. Corey Stoll will play Lieutenant Schrank, the New York City detective charged with quelling civic unrest in his racially-torn precinct.

The film's previously announced cast members include Rita Moreno (Valentina, she's also an EP on the pic), Ansel Elgort (Tony), Rachel Ziegler (Maria), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo) and Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino).

Brian d'Arcy James originated the role of King George in the sold-out Off-Broadway run of Hamilton at The Public Theater. In 2015, immediately following Hamilton, Brian starred in the Broadway musical Something Rotten. In film, Brian starred in the 2016 Academy Award-winning Best Picture Spotlight, and was awarded the 2016 SAG Award, Critics Choice Award, Gotham Award and the Independent Spirit's Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble for his portrayal of Matt Carroll. Off Broadway highlights include his Obie winning solo performance of The Good Thief, Drama Desk nominations for Giant and The Wild Party along with originating roles in Next to Normal and Floyd Collins, among others. He can also be seen in the latest Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

Stoll could be seen most recently as Buzz Aldrin in Universal's First Man. He also had roles in films such as Midnight in Paris, Ant-Man, The Seagull, This Is Where I Leave You and the upcoming Sopranos prequel movie The Many Saints of Newark and The Report. On TV, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his turn on Netflix's House of Cards. On stage, Stoll recently played lead roles in Othello, Julius Caesar and Plenty for the New York Shakespeare Festival/Public Theater.

ANGELS IN AMERICA scribe Tony Kushner is currently working on the film's script. Joining Spielberg as producers are Kevin McCollum and Kristie Macosko Krieger.

The 1961 musical drama film WEST SIDE STORY was directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. The film is an adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn was inspired by William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. It starred Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno, and George Chakiris.

Released on October 18, 1961 through United Artists, the film became the second highest grossing film of the year in the United States and was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won 10, including Best Picture (as well as a special award for Robbins), becoming he record holder for the most wins for a movie musical.
