Tonight we learned just how long it takes to either kill or save a marriage. This is key information for those of us planning on diving into unhealthy relationships in the future.

Callie and Arizona's marriage has been in a trouble for a while now. Granted, most of the relationships on GREYS are pretty unstable of late. Callie and Arizona's, however, was one that was easy to root for. They'd overcome so much; missing limbs, blaming the other person for the missing limb, cheating, etcetera. Theirs was a love that seemed to be able to push beyond anything, but with Arizona wanting to focus on her fellowship and Callie assuming that that meant she didn't want to have a baby, things were rocky once again.

So off to couple's therapy the two went, where Arizona started sentences that Callie interrupted, and the therapist eventually suggested that the two go on a break. Callie was not on board with that idea. She thought it was stupid. If they were trying to fix things and become more united, then why would they want to spend time apart? Arizona, however, was open to it. She agreed to a 30 day pseudo separation that Callie should've been grateful for, because she really wanted to be apart for three or six months.

Now, I say "pseudo" separation because their therapist created a set of what might be the stupidest "break" rules ever. They were to continue living together, but had to split taking care of their daughter, Sophia. They weren't allowed to speak to each other - at all. Remember when you were in college and lived in the dorms with that one random person on the other side of the suite that you never talked to? Yea, that was their living situation, except they silently passed a kid back and forth. Oh and since there was no talking, there was no sex; not together or with other people. You hear that Ross and Rachel? No "We were on a break!" moments here.

Callie had a hard time with the silent treatment, probably because it was bizarre. Arizona seemingly dealt with it a little easier; using Dr. Edwards to pass messages to Callie about needing to reschedule time with Sophia.

One upside to this weird set up was that Meredith and Callie got to bond a little. Remember when Callie was with George (T.R. Knight) and Meredith hated her? Remember when George cheated on Callie despite the fact that she's the most amazing woman EVER, and pretty much emotionally destroyed her? Yea, I'm not over that either. Anyway, Callie and Meredith got drunk, discussed their dysfunctional marriages and sang about vaginas. Callie confirmed that Meredith was never a lesbian, and that the "B" in LGBTQ stood for both bisexual and badass. Meredith was withholding sex from McDreamy. The more you know.

Around Day ten of their unseparated separation, Callie and Arizona kissed, which they confessed to their therapist, who set the clock back to Day One. If this hack therapeutic suggestion was going to work, they had to remain silent and sexually frustrated for the full 30 days.

During the new non-flirty 30, Arizona struggled with her fellowship and dealt with a minor bout of jealousy. Callie thought she had caused a patient to attempt suicide, but McDreamy informed her that she didn't have that much power in the world. She also came to an amazing surgical revelation over a burger and a pickle with Meredith.

Right before the end of their 30 days, Callie and Arizona broke and had what I assume was epic sex, which the agreed not to tell the therapist about. At their next session, Arizona spoke about how helpful she thought the break was; how it made her realize that even though she had no idea what she was doing at work, that Callie was her anchor and she loved her so, so much. Callie wept and it was stunning. Then she told Arizona that in those 30 plus days, she had been happier than she had been in a long time.

In the end, it was Callie who cemented their break and decided that they both had been trying too hard to keep mending something that was shattered long ago. Will their perma-separation last? Only time and Shonda Rhimes will tell.

What did you think about the whole ordeal? Do you think the initial break scenario made any sense at all? Do you think Callie and Arizona will get back together? Do you even want them to or are you over that bit of drama?
