John battles a baby-stealing monster in the mid-season finale, 'The Saint of Last Resort.' Sit a spell, won't you?

Perhaps it is my Catholic school upbringing, but I never trust nuns. I'll stop before I get too much ahead of myself, though.

We open on a convent in Mexico. Sister Anne Marie (Caire van der Boom) has just brought gummy bears to a woman who has just given birth. The nun leaves to attend to her other duties. We see a demonic pair of hands approach the baby. The women screams. The nun runs in to find the mother slaughtered.

In the magic cabin, Zed (Angelica Celaya) has gotten her artistic mojo back (she lost it between last week's episode and this week's after last week when she touched the blackened heart of a fallen angel). She is drawing a creature. John (Matt Ryan) explains it's a nasty piece of work called an Invunche (a creature from Chilote folklore that also has appeared in the "Swamp Thing" comic books). Fans of the comics might immediatley assume things aren't going to end well for the dear sister (should the TV show again follow the path set out by the comics).

And speaking of the good sister, she astral projects herself into the magic cabin to ask for John's help. He owes her a favor and she's come to collect. The fact that John would have a shared history with a catholic nun only makes me love the character more. He decides to head to Mexico, leaving Zed behind as he fears she is still too weak from her run in with the fallen angel.

Chas (Charles Halford) drives John to Mexico. Turns out, John did not know that Annie has joined the sisterhood. Just because she's now a nun, doesn't mean John won't try to charm her. Oh, John! She rebuffs him. She joined the church as pennance for her role in the botched exorcism that also haunts John.

John and Chas investigate the convent. John finds a mouse hole in the wall that he suspects was how the Invunche got in. After taking a moment to flirt with another nun ("Sister Flirtatious started it," he tells Anne Marie), John casts some rune stones to locate the beast. The stones burst into flames. The creature has covered its tracks and John says that's a good thing as that means the baby is still alive.

They head to the dead woman's house. Anne Marie begins digging by a tree. John pulls a pear down. It appears to be skin. John takes out his trusty switchblade and cuts into it. It bleeds. It also starts raining blood from the tree. John tells the greiving father he knows who took the baby (and murdered his wife): one of Eve's sisters. Turns out, Adam was turned down by all of Eve's sisters (they refused to bow to the will of man/God and now rule in hell). And it took another baby.

Zed leaves the protecting confines of the magic cabin to pick up art supplies. She runs into Eddie (David A. Greggory). The nude model just happens to be also shopping. He invites her for drinks. She turns to pay for her purchases. He texts "I have her."

Over drinks, she touches him and has a vision. She knows she is in danger. She offers to do the next round at her place (the magically boobytrapped cabin). Smart girl.

The other baby is the illegitimate grandson of the man whose new wife just gave birth and was killed. Pops didn't know junior had a girlfriend, much less got her pregnant. John figures the family is being targeted. John wants to cast a naming spell in some water on the convent grounds. Anne Marie will hear none of it.

As Chas consoles Anne Marie, John goes about his business. That is until Sister Flirtatious shows up. John pegs her for the demon and begins to name off all of Eve's sisters until he rings the bell. It's Lamashtu of Mesopatamian myth who is known for torturing pregnant women. They fight. She nearly drowns him, but thanks to the trusty switchblad, he stabs her. She recoils and runs off.

Back at the magic cabin, Zed gets the better of Eddie. Eddie tells her that her father wants her home and calls her "Mary." She punches him, knocking him out.

Back in Mexico, the plot thickens. Pops is from a family of powerful warlocks who haven't been seen for centuries but have now possibly returned (could this be the rising tide the angel Manny warned of). John hatches a plan that involves filling a chicken with the blood of the man in order to trap the creature.

At the magic cabin, Eddie tells Zed he is part of "The Crusade" whose believers are everywhere. Two of them show up. Zed tries to use Eddie as a bargaining chip. The man shoots Eddie dead. They have come to take her awake or asleep. Eddie was just collateral damage. Zed runs and manages to push the woman into one of the rooms that opens into a void. The man catches Zed and drugs her, though.

In Mexico, Chas, John and Anne Marie follow the creature into the sewers after she takes the bait of the dead chicken. Not before Anne Marie takes the man's offer to take his gun, though. Why would a nun need a gun?

They find and rescue the babies. John threatens to kill one of the babies unless Lamashtu tells him the plan. It's not good. They want to bring hell on earth and send humanity back into hiding. John sends Lamashtu back to hell, but not before another of Eve's sisters shows up. Anne Marie opts to save the babies and shoots John so that the creature will be attracted to John's blood, letting her escape. Manny's prediction of betrayal has come to fruition. John has been betrayed by someone he trusted.

And with that, the mid-season finale ends on a cliffhanger. We'll be back on Jan. 9 for part II.
