BILLY ELLIOT's Lee Hall to Adapt Michael Morpurgo's WAR HORSE for the Big Screen

Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel 'War Horse' will receive a big screen adaptation by Tony Award-winning book writer Lee Hall, according to a story in the Hollywood Reporter. Hall is most notably known for having penned the screenplay for the 1999 film 'Billy Elliot'.

With the First World War as its backdrop, Morpurgo's 'War Horse' is the story of the friendship between a young recruit and his horse. The book was a runner-up for the Whitbread Award. A UK adaptation, written by Nick Stafford, of Morpurgo's novel is currently running at the New London Theatre in the West End.

Details on the film adaptation are yet to be released, though Stephen Spielberg has been confirmed as one of the producers of the film.

Lee Hall is an English playwright and screenwriter, who penned the screenplay for the 1999 film 'Billy Elliot', garnering an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing in a Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. Hall went onto write the book and lyrics of Elton John's stage musical version of 'Billy Elliot', which earned him the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical. Hall's other works include, 'Cooking with Elvis', 'Spoonface Steinberg', 'The Pitmen Painters', amongst others.
