Florentine Opera Releases Additional Details On The Resignation Of William Florescu by BWW News Desk
- May 17, 2018 Since the announcement of William Florescu's resignation from the Florentine Opera Company on May 9, 2018, we have received information previously unknown to the company regarding Mr. Florescu's conduct in the workplace. Having learned this additional information, we feel that greater transparency is critical in order to move forward with promoting the positive work culture that we expect. For that reason, we wish to make clear that Mr. Florescu's resignation was related to his violation of the Florentine Opera's policies and prohibitions concerning sexual misconduct.
BWW Review: SAN DIEGO OPERA'S ONE AMAZING NIGHT at The Balboa Theater by Ron Bierman
- May 17, 2018 The San Diego Opera's last concert this season was billed as 'One Amazing Night.' The program was originally scheduled to feature soprano Lise Lindstrom and tenor Rene Barbera, but Barbera was released from his commitment when he was offered a Teatro alla Scala debut as Ernesto in a new production of Don Pasquale. He's sung multiple time in San Diego, and will likely return, but the company understood a La Scala debut means too much to an opera singer's career to stand in his way. Bass-baritone Greer Grimsley, who had previously performed with Lindstrom in the San Diego production of Salome, was an effective stand-in. Earlier this season Grimsley played the pirate king here in Pirates of Penzance with surprising comic flair, though best known for dark and heroic roles.

VIDEO: La Fura dels Baus Comes To Lincoln Center This Summer With THE CREATION by BWW News Desk
- May 16, 2018 Avant-garde Catalan theater collective La Fura dels Baus brings its “freewheeling blend of audiovisual wizardry, acrobatics, and puppetry” (Guardian, U.K) to Haydn's famous oratorio. A relentless stream of imagery, text, and stage pageantry touching on everything from philosophy and physics to DNA research and refugees transforms the Enlightenment-era masterpiece into an immersive theatrical experience. A sublime musical performance by the period-instrument Insula Orchestra, vocal ensemble accentus, and a cast of intrepid soloists, led by visionary conductor Laurence Equilbey, anchors this astonishing, maximalist production that explodes all notions of who we are and where we came from.
BWW Review: The Bantam of the Opera Strikes Again! by Steve Callahan
- May 15, 2018 For several seasons I've searched for a term to describe Gateway Opera. In a city flush with larger companies-Opera Theater St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, and Winter Opera-which offer truly 'grand opera', what can one call this little company which gives us such delicious bite-sized treats? They're so small, so full of feisty energy and spirit.
Aha! I think this company is 'The Bantam of the Opera'! And, like that murderous older haunting figure, Gateway Opera, in it's evening of '15 Minute Mozarts,' really slays 'em-but without the need of a chandelier. The grandest chandelier would be dimmed by the brightly blazing talents on display at The Chapel last week-end.
