Todd Snider Releases New Album 'Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3'

Todd Snider shares his new album, Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3, today via Aimless Records. Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 was recorded in Hendersonville, Tennessee at the Cash family's Cash Cabin Studio using some of the instruments that Johnny himself owned. The album is about the fulfillment of a dream, not the aspirational kind, but an actual dream, a recurring dream Snider had about Johnny Cash after he first visited Cash Cabin Studio. The dreams inspired him to book sessions there with his supergroup, Hard Working Americans, in 2016, 2017, and then again for his new solo project in October of 2018. During that week of recording in October, the captivating collection of new works emerged as Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3.

Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 includes Snider's latest single, "Talking Reality Television Blues," which is accompanied by a brilliant animated music video that takes one on a journey told by a cartoon version of Todd Snider. "Talking Reality Television Blues" nods to the spirits of Woody and Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan as they trace a wild path between "the day some fool made the decision to turn on the television" and the man in the White House today. Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 also features "Just Like Overnight" and "Like A Force Of Nature," featuring Jason Isbell on background vocals. "Like A Force Of Nature" tells a story originally meant for Dave Schools, Snider's band mate in his supergroup, Hard Working Americans, but became a song for the entire band about the impact of their music and friendship. If it weren't for the teachings of Dave Schools, Snider wouldn't have gone down the folk music journey he did. Track 7, "The Ghost of Johnny Cash," is the reason forCash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3. After a visit to Cash Cabin Studio for a Loretta Lynn session in 2015, where she recorded a song that they co-wrote, Snider began having a recurring dream about Cash. The dream led him to book time at the studio, inspiring him to write "The Ghost of Johnny Cash," which tells the story of Loretta Lynn dancing with Cash's ghost outside of the studio in the middle of the night.

Cash Cabin Sessions, Vol. 3 shows Snider's folk influence and marks a departure from the past six years of making rock records. At a point in time when the world has never been more complicated, loud, and confusing, Snider went back to his roots as a folk singer to a simpler, quieter form of expression. It might be what the world is waiting to hear: just a man, his guitar, and the truth.
