'You Know It's Real' wields a spine of driving staccato bass, a deep blue wash of analogue synths and woozy, romantic falsetto vocals over LCD Sound System beats and heralds the announcement of The Tapes self-titled debut EP, out on Friday 11th November via Nook Nook Records (the introduction label behind the debut singles from MØ, Spring King and The Big Moon).

The pair first crossed paths as solo artists in Australia's electronic music scene, touring extensively across this great nation before becoming regular collaborators on each other's releases. An impromptu writing trip to the South Coast of New South Wales in early 2016 led to the discovery of Heinz Peri-Peri mayo as well as defining the sound of "The Tapes".

The duo made their way back up to the city and took up residence in their studio above one of Sydney's hotspots of music and culture, FBi Radio. Their space at this South-Sydney landmark is now home to a collection of quirky analog synths and outboard gear, as well as an impressive assortment of rugs and guitars.

"It's been an amazing ride making music together so far. Ideas flow from one of our brain's to the other effortlessly. The vision we have for The Tapes is to make timeless music and have it framed in our own unique, weird-as-hell way; there's no point in doing something that's already been done."
- Andrew & Mickey

The Tapes have an extensive background in music. Having traditional training from an early age, a young Mickey Kojak found his feet in jazz, touring with the some of the state's best ensemble's, opening the door to a world of abstract and eclectic electronic music. One laptop and a few months out of school, Mickey had earned a spot as one of triple j's most played artist's of 2014 with his hybrid house track "Feel My Pain", leading into a headline national tour as well as supporting Hayden James on his "Something About You" Australia run. Spots at homegrown festivals Groovin' The Moo and Splendour in the Grass, solidified Mickey as a name on the rise.

Andrew Grant is no stranger to the spotlight as well. His own project, La Mar has an unprecedented run on the blog aggregator Hype Machine, having had three singles reach number one consecutively, two of which found there way into the soundtrack for MTV's primetime thriller Scream, before gaining accolades from the likes of Pete Tong and Annie Mac, with extensive airplay across all of BBC's platforms. As well as this, Andrew has been behind the scenes of some of electronic music's biggest artist's of the past two years, engineering for the likes of A-Trak, Peking Duk, Art vs. Science and George Maple.

The EP will be unveiled live at a hometown showcase on the eve of their EP release at Civic Hotel in Sydney on Thursday 10th November with the help of Julian Sudek (World Champion) on drums and Craig Willson (Emma Louise) on guitar, in what promises to be a wild and immersive four-piece experience.
