2G: SIXTEEN GOING ON SEVENTEEN at Joe's Pub celebrates the 2012-13 season and introduces its commissioned writers. Playwright Sung Rno is an NEA/TCG Playwriting Fellow, graduating from Harvard and Brown. His musical partner AaRon Jones graduated from NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. Playwright Anna Moench is a recent Jerome and Van Lier Fellow, as well as a member of The Public Theater's Emerging Writer's Group. Five-time Tony Award Winner Audra McDonald just recorded one of Composer/Lyricist Adam Gwon's songs for her latest album and performed it on PBS. You're invited to sneak peek at their plays and musicals-in-progress and see why these significant voices are making 2g an artistic home. Ukulele-wielding comedian Jen Kwok hosts the evening featuring the talents of Alfredo Narciso, Maria-Christina Oliveras, Damon Daunno, Broadway Barkada, Eileen Rivera, David Ross, Elena Chang, Jed Orlemann, Eugene Oh,Aisha Jackson, and more to be announced. The evening also features works by playwrights Mrinalini Kamath and Lolan Sevilla. Second Generation, under the artistic direction of Victor Maog, is a sixteen-year old, NYC-based non-profit that has produced at Carnegie Hall, The New York State Theatre, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and The Public Theater. 2g is one of the country's most important incubators of Asian-American theatrical talent.

This June Brooklyn label Roc-elle Records releases the soundtrack to 10-time Emmy winner David Grubin's film Downtown Express, starring music talents Philippe Quint and Nellie McKay (Old Hats). The soundtrack is a lively mix of original pop music co-written by Michael Bacon (The Bacon Brothers) and the two stars, performed by McKay and Quint with their onscreen band, and moving classical performances by Quint, a Grammy-nominated violinist. The all-acoustic Gonzalo Bergara Quartet plays a modern variant of 1930s Django Reinhardt-inspired gypsy jazz. Composer and lead guitarist Gonzalo Bergara mixes a cascade of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina. His first CD, Porteña Soledad, was Editor's Pick in Guitar Player Magazine, and Vintage Guitar Magazine called it a "masterpiece." The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet consists of Gonzalo Bergara on lead guitar, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar, Leah Zeger on violin, and Brian Netzley on upright bass. The music is heavily influenced by Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club of France, as well as the traditional jazz and music of Bergara's true home, Buenos Aires. "Gonzalo Bergara's music exists in a way that very little music does. He has lavished such care on every phrase, built each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous, the music becomes sculpture. It has weight, density, gravity. This is serious and deeply moving.

We are thrilled to continue the NY Theremin Society's concert series by announcing an exciting international line-up of distinguished Theremin Virtuosos to perform June 28th at Joe's Pub. Thereminists include Thorwald Jorgensen from the Netherlands, one of the leading European classical thereminsts in his first NYC appearance; Llamano from Japan, who created quite a stir with her subway theremin video series; altermodern artist and composer Anthony Ptak; Charlie Draper from the UK, protégé of the instrument's inventor, and host Rob Schwimmer. Each player has their own unique style and approach to the instrument making for a night full of contrasts, musical surprises and sublime beauty. Join the growing Theremin movement in the 21st century! (NOTE-- Sadly Dorit Chrysler is out of town for this concert but will be back next time). Founded by Suzanne Fiol and Dorit Chrysler, musician/composer, the NY Theremin Society launched its concert series December 2nd 2005, bringing together skilled interpreters on Theremin, each presenting their solo works and joining in an experimental Theremin Orchestra. Those concert series took place at Issue Project Room and sold out regularly, featuring noted players such as Pamelia Kurstin, Dalit Warshaw, Anthony Ptak, ElizaBeth Brown, David Simons, Armen Ra and Rob Schwimmer just to name a few. The NY Theremin Society started to serve as a platform for Thereminists and Enthusiasts and its mission statement evolved; namely to exchange, inspire and educate, as well as to demonstrate the surprising variety of different approaches that this relatively young and unique instrument has to offer in the contemporary world of music. The NY Theremin Society was instrumental in the recreation of a Ten Piece Theremin Orchestra performing at the LA Disney Hall (emulating the first theremin orchestra concert taking place at Carnegie Hall in 1930.)

Brooklyn-based, alternative pop artist Ryan Amador plays a special show at Joe's Pub to celebrate the release of his debut self-titled album just in time for NY Pride Week. Following June performances for The Trevor Project at St. John The Divine and Pittsburgh Pride, opening for Adam Lambert, Ryan is no stranger to the LGBT scene. His most recent video "Define Me" garnered over 100,000 views in its first three weeks online and is featured in multiple online forums including the Huffington Post, NewNowNext, and TheBacklot, receiving attention for its bold humanitarian message. The money made from the song's sales will be donated to The Trevor Project on the evening of the performance. The album, "Ryan Amador," is a personal account of the struggle to understand commitment in the face of love, time, and relationships. In addition to "Define Me," the album features ten brand-new tracks written over the last three years and produced by frequent collaborator, David Baloche. Ryan's sound references his late 90's Pop/Rock & R&B influences with a theatrical vocal presence and accessible melodies. Ryan recently performed at Rockwood Music Hall and DROM in New York and was featured in the 2013 ASCAP EXPO Artist's Showcase in Los Angeles.

No BS! Brass Band is a powerful brass band that embraces the spirit of New Orleans into its original East Coast modern funk. Their danceable arrangements are outstandingly well thought-out and organized, drawing inspiration from funk, jazz, klezmer, calypso, and Led Zeppelin. Nearly every member has had conservatory training, holding various Bachelors and Masters degrees in music. Based in Richmond, Virginia, this band has quickly earned a reputation as a premiere band to see for an evening of heart-pounding energy and uncontrollable dancing. The musicians of No BS! Brass Band knew that the sound and music of No BS! Brass Band had to live up to the name. In putting together the compositions and arrangements, the writers stripped away all of the "b.s." to give the audience something solid, unique, organic, real, and powerful. The resulting music is a true definition of the "Richmond sound." This instrumental funk music has strong influences of jazz and rock, like Led Zeppelin played by a brass band. Being a 13-piece brass band, they have the look of New Orleans with the raw sound of East Coast funk. The music is extremely danceable and high-energy.

Visual artist, dancer, actor and downtown cabaret artist John Kelly will be performing 'Rebel Songs of a Range Queen', including songs by Kurt Weill, Charles Aznavour, Mr. Bungle, Jacques Brel, Holcombe Waller, The Good, The Bad, & The Queen, Joanna Newsome, The Clash, & The Shins. Fresh from a multiple character turn in Fassbinder's 'In A Year With 13 Moons' at Yale Rep, 2013 USA Artists Award winner John Kelly returns to Joe's Pub for a 4 performance residency, on the heels of his breakthrough debut concerts last fall (interrupted by Hurricane Sandy). 'Rebel Songs of a Range Queen' will display his 3-octave voice singing as a weathered, genre-traipsing punk altar boy, as the rebellious, orphaned sage. Music Director Benjamin Ickies will play accordion and piano, backed up by a brass section. A portion of the proceeds will go to the ongoing Hurricane Sandy Relief. This June Joe's Pub at The Public hosted Symphonic Sundays, a new series that pairs established artists with the 18-piece orchestral pop outfit MOTHER FALCON. This Sunday the series ends with Mother Falcon's epic tribute to Radiohead's seminal album OK Computer played in its entirety. Mother Falconare still coming down from a six-performance run at this year's SXSW, where they were cited as one of Bob Boilen's "15 Essential Moments From SXSW 2013" , and Stephen Thompson tapped them as his "favorite young band of the festival's opening night" on NPR's "All Things Considered".
