Portland Ovations brings the "irrepressible smiles and amazing choreography" (Alt Daily) of the African Children's Choir to Merrill Auditorium for an afternoon concert on Sunday, March 2nd at 4pm.

The 24-member ensemble of singers and dancers, ranging in ages 7 to 10 years old, melt the hearts of audiences across the world with their celebratory concerts featuring well-loved children's songs, hand clapping, spirituals and contemporary tunes, accompanied by traditional instrumentation. Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. They represent all the children of a continent and they demonstrate the potential of African children to become strong leaders for a better future in their land. Having performed in some of the world's most storied settings, including the Pentagon, the United Nations, Westminster Abbey and Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms series, the African Children's Choir touch the souls of all ages with their inspirational musical performance. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, the children are radiant with hope, musically gifted and wonderfully entertaining. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they return to their homelands with the tools necessary for bettering their future.

Portland Ovations' presentation of the African Children's Choir is graciously sponsored by Bangor Daily News - BDN Maine and supported by the Center for Cultural Exchange Foundation.

Tickets for the African Children's Choir range from $29 to $35 for Ovations' Members, $32 to $38 for the general public and a limited amount of student tickets are also available at $15. To purchase tickets, visit www.portlandovations.org contact PortTIX at 207-842-0800 or visit the box office window at Merrill Auditorium.
