Critically acclaimed Nashville-based singer-songwriter Kim Richey will embark on the first leg of her U.S. tour in support of her seventh album, Thorn In My Heart, beginning March 22 in Chicago. With stops scheduled for Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York City, Cambridge, Nashville and Birmingham, more dates are to follow throughout the year.
Recorded at Mr. Lemon's Studio in Nashville, Thorn In My Heart was produced by Neilson Hubbard (Glen Phillips, Matthew Ryan, The Apache Relay) and features 12 original compositions. The follow up to 2010's Wreck Your Wheels, the album features guest appearances from Jason Isbel, Trisha Yearwood, Carl Broemel of My Morning Jacket and Pat Sansone of Wilco, among many others.
Returning to Nashville after three years in London, the Ohio native says, "From the beginning I wanted this to be a country record. I think that all started back when I was asked to learn a country cover for a BBC radio program in Glasgow, "The Ricky Ross Show." I learned "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Kris Kristofferson. We worked up a version to do at our shows. We started adding other songs to our show that had more of a traditional country feel and then it took off from there."
Richey, a former professional chef, got her first record deal at 37 and has garnered success as a songwriter, co-writing two number one hits; the Grammy-nominated "Believe Me Baby I Lied" for Trisha Yearwood and "Nobody Wins" for Radney Foster. Other songwriting contributions include songs for Jim Lauderdale, Brooks & Dunn and Patty Loveless, Mary Chapin Carpenter and James Morrison. Her vocals also appear on albums by Trisha Yearwood, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gretchen Peters, Jason Isbell, Rodney Crowell, William Shatner, Ryan Adams and Shawn Colvin.
Her self-titled debut was released in 1995 on Mercury Nashville, followed by Bitter Sweet (1997/Mercury Nashville), Glimmer(1999/Mercury Nashville), Rise (2002/Lost Highway), Chinese Boxes (2007/Vanguard), and Wreck Your Wheels (2010/Thirty Tigers).
