Charlie Parr Announces Newport Folk Festival and New Tour Dates

Red House artist Charlie Parr releases his video for "Dog" today from his Red House album of the same name and you can view it on Youtube or on Apple Music. Shot on location in Parr's hometown of Duluth, Minnesota with a cast of locals and their dogs, the video was directed by Dan Huiting (Father John Misty, New Pornographers, Bon Iver).

Filmed in early winter against the backdrop of Lake Superior, the video plays like a short film. While the narrative (and intentions of its protagonist) are open to interpretation, the deeply soulful expressions of the dogs (especially the main dog, Sophia) and of the main character (Molly Ryman) fit the song's haunting refrain, "A soul is a soul is a soul is a soul."

"I'm an agnostic," Parr says. "My mantra is, 'I don't know.' How much don't I know about what's going on inside of my dog? There's some people that think dogs don't even have souls. 'Dog' is about that question. The presumptuousness of deciding you know something so much so that you're going to make it into a dogma that you can now inflict on somebody else. I've got nothing against any religion, but when you start telling someone else, you need to act this way because I believe this, that's when it breaks down for me... Dogs for me are a good example of that. We make a lot of unfounded assumptions about animals. And people."

2018 has been a busy year for Parr. He has just returned form a six-week UK/European tour and has announced his debut appearance at Newport Folk Fest this July, as well as additional festival and tour dates including support slots with the Tedeschi/Trucks band.
