Mirga Gražinyt?-Tyla will make her New York Philharmonic debut conducting Dvorák's Cello Concerto, with Gautier Capuçon as soloist; Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2; and Sibelius's Lemminkainen and the Maidens of the Island, Thursday, January 3, 2019, at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, January 4 at 11:00 a.m.; and Saturday, January 5 at 8:00 p.m.

Mirga Gražinyt?-Tyla was declared "a new star of the podium" by The New Yorker after her 2014 performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, which was also named one of The New Yorker's "10 notable performances" of the year.

Dvorák decided to write a Cello Concerto after seeing New York Philharmonic Principal Cello Victor Herbert premiere his own Cello Concerto No. 2 with the Philharmonic in 1894; two years later, the Orchestra presented the US Premiere of Dvorák Cello Concerto, written in New York. While writing the work, Dvorák learned that his sister-in-law, with whom he was in love, was dying. Unable to return to Europe to visit her, Dvorák quotes his song Leave Me Alone, a favorite of hers, in the concerto. In 2009 Gautier Capuçon released an acclaimed recording of both Dvorák's Cello Concerto and Herbert's Cello Concerto No. 2.
