Launch Into The Wonders Of Outer Space During Family Musical Mornings Concert Image

Pacific Symphony will present an exciting "Family Musical Mornings" event with the "Intergalactic Adventures" concert, exploring outer space and beyond through the music of "Star Wars," "Star Trek," "2001: A Space Odyssey" and excerpts from Holst's legendary suite, "The Planets." NASA footage for this concert has been provided by retired NASA astronaut Steven Ray Swanson. This program was created in consultation with Mr. Swanson and is inspired by his real-life explorations to outer space. Conducted by Pacific Symphony's Associate Conductor and Music Director of Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, Roger Kalia, the concert features the music of the spheres performed by Pacific Symphony and Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, with performances at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall on April 13.

An interactive Musical Carnival will be at each concert that encourages children to test drive instruments, interact with members of Pacific Symphony and participate in themed crafts. Activities start at 9 a.m. for 10 a.m. concertgoers and 12:15 p.m. for 11:30 a.m. concertgoers. Tickets for "Intergalactic Adventures" start at $15. For more information or to purchase tickets, call (714) 755-5799 or visit www.PacificSymphony.org. This concert is part of the 2018-19 "Family Musical Mornings" series that consists of five 45-minute concerts designed for children aged 5-11, sponsored by Farmers & Merchants Bank.

From its premiere to the present day, Holst's seven-movement suite, "The Planets," has been enduringly popular, influential, widely performed and frequently recorded. Each movement of the suite is named after a planet of the Solar System and its corresponding astrological character as defined by Holst. The opening fanfare from Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra" was forever cemented in film history with its use during the opening scene in Stanley Kubrick's groundbreaking science fiction epic, "2001: A Space Odyssey." Audiences will also hear key moments of cinematic scoring from the beloved science fiction adventure series, "Star Wars" and "Star Trek."

CONCERT PROGRAM

STRAUSS: Opening Fanfare from "Also Sprach Zarathustra"

HOLST: Mars, Jupiter and Uranus from "The Planets"

GIACCHINO: Main Title from "Star Trek: Into Darkness"

RACHMANINOFF: "Allegro Molto" from Symphony No. 2
