Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival Presents Schubert And Adam Gopnik

Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival (CCCMF), Cape Cod's premiere presenter of summer chamber music presents Schubert and Adam Gopnik on Friday, August 10, 7:30 pm at First Congregational Church, 200 Main Street, Wellfleet.

A truly unique performance on Cape Cod! Bestselling author, lecturer, lyricist and three-decade columnist for The New Yorker Adam Gopnik narrates a unique program featuring Schubert's monumental "Octet in F Major, D. 803". The music of Schubert's Octet is paired in dialogue with one of New York's most distinctive literary voices. Between movements of the Octet, Gopnick, a notable fan of the composer, reads an original narrative about the intersection of music and life, enhancing the beautifully melodic and enduringly popular Schubert work.

Although written to model Beethoven's "Septet" - the gorgeous melodies and theme that originated from a Schubert singspiel composed nine years prior - this octet is pure Schubert. Composed in preparation for the later full-scale work "Great Symphony in C Major", the Octet is a wonderment of chamber music achievement. Schubert undertook the task to better himself as a composer, feeling he had progressed beyond his youthful compositions to a new level of artistic creation. Integrated into musical context, Gopnik's intelligent, witty and deeply personal commentary on art and life makes this an inspiring and unforgettable evening.

An assembled ensemble featuring the Borromeo String Quartet, and Festival favorite musicians Cynde Iverson, bassoon; Eric Reed, horn; Tony Falanga, bass and Festival Co-Artistic Director Jon Manasse, clarinet; make for a magnificent evening of music making.

The visionary performances of the prize-winning Borromeo String Quartet have established them as one of the most important string quartets of our time. Now celebrating their 27th year as an ensemble, the Borromeo have performed a vast repertoire worldwide and collaborated with many of today's great composers and performers. Audiences and critics alike have championed the Borromeo's ability to bring fire back to often-heard repertoire, while making even the most challenging new music approachable. The Borromeo continues to be a pioneer in its use of technology, recognized with the trailblazing distinction as the first string quartet to utilize laptop computers on the concert stage, a revealing and transformative experience that they now teach to students around the world. The quartet features Nicholas Kitchen, violin, Kristopher Tong, violin, Luther Warren, viola and Yeesun Kim, cello. The artists currently maintain residency at New England Conservatory of Music, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Taos School of Music summer program.

Festival seating is limited to venue capacity, advance purchase is recommended. Tickets purchased online can be printed at home or picked up at will call at the performances. Tickets may also be purchased by calling or visiting the box office at 508-247-9400 or at 3 Main Street, Unit 6, North Eastham. Box office hours are 10 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday. Phone orders are available until 12 noon on the day of each concert.

About the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival

Hailed by The New York Times as "A Triumph of Quality," the Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival (CCCMF) has been a year-round presenter of chamber music and a major contributor to the cultural life of Cape Cod since its inception in 1979. Founded as the Cape & Islands Chamber Music Festival by the late collaborative pianist Samuel Sanders, the Festival continues his legacy. Now entering its 38th season, CCCMF presents four weeks of intensive chamber music programming in a variety of Cape locations in July and August.
