Bruce Springsteen is widely regarded as a working-class hero. At the start of his career, Springsteen stuck to his working-class upbringing and could hardly speak, much less about politics, without his guitar in hand. Yet in recent years he has become quite outspoken, particularly on the discrepancy between the American Dream and American Reality. In the newly released e-book Workingman, June Skinner Sawyers traces the evolution of Springsteen's beliefs, beginning with his childhood and ending with his recent albums, the hard copies of his convictions.

Sawyers follows his life, examining his albums and a variety of influences, especially his Catholic upbringing and his family life, to show how he became an outspoken icon for working-class America. Contrary to appraisals that portray him as just a romantic liberal, 'Workingman' argues that Springsteen is an authentic voice of proletarian America in his ability to capture the essence of their struggles.

Now and Then Reader, an e-book publisher, will release 'Workingman' on the eve of Bruce Springsteen's 64th birthday, exclusively on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, and Apple iTunes iBookstore.

June Skinner Sawyers has written and lectured extensively on Springsteen. Her work appears in 'Racing in the Street: The Bruce Springsteen Reader' (Penguin), 'Tougher Than the Rest: 100 Best Bruce Springsteen Songs' (Omnibus Press), 'Reading the Boss: The Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Works of Bruce Springsteen' (Lexington Books), and the DVD 'Bruce Springsteen Under Review 1978-1982.' She is a member of the advisory board of BOSS: The Biannual Online-Journal of Springsteen Studies.
