Nelson Mandela's Life Examined in New Book

SAINT SIMONS ISLAND, Ga.

Author Ervin Williams remembers how Nelson Mandela rose during a time when South Africa was torn apart by strife, brutality and racial unrest, and how he led the nation to reconciliation. His book, "The Leadership Traits and Footsteps of Nelson Mandela" (published by Xlibris), takes readers to walk in the footprints of Mandela, showing them what it takes to guide a nation through rebirth and democratization.

Williams' book shows readers that leadership is not black or white nor does it have national boundaries. With Mandela's example, it purports that leadership is a manifestation of meeting and mastering the trials and tribulations of life while always being mindful of others, whether being a fellow-prisoner or as a co-equal president of another nation. The overall theme is the struggle for individual and national leadership. It shows how great leadership arose in an individual as he and his country faced almost insurmountable situations, and how Mandela took the lead in overcoming such adversity, guiding the county as it emerged from the shadow of apartheid.

Williams remembers seeing how Mandela orchestrated a peaceful transition and reconciliation process during his presidency. The author contrasts this with desegregation in the United States, noting how Mandela's transition was without riots and without a tragedy, unlike the National Guard killing on an Ohio college campus that occurred in the United States during the beginning of the civil rights era in America.

Looking at the turmoil in the Middle East and the continent of Africa, Williams says that Mandela's thoughts and remarks should be a universal mantra for all: "No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite."
