Exhibit of Photography by Wendy Caldwell Maloney Comes to Jewish Community Center of Greater Buffalo

By:

An exhibit of photography by Wendy Caldwell Maloney will be on display at the Jewish Community Center, 787 Delaware Avenue, March 10 - April 28, 2017.

Wendy Caldwell Maloney is a native Buffalonian whose interest in art began with a broad foundation in studio art and ceramics at The Park School of Buffalo, and continued at Alfred University where she earned a BFA in Art & Design with concentrations in drawing, printmaking and photography. Following college, she was employed in the pre-press industry for a decade before launching her own graphic design business in the early 90's. As sole proprietor of Current Design, she served the WNY business community for two decades, at which time a yearning to return to the fine arts led her to study watercolor with the late Margaret M. Martin. A new passion was discovered, and within a year she was showing and selling her work in WNY and New England with considerable success. Inspired by rich textures, vibrant colors, and exciting line qualities of the natural world, her work ranges from organic and botanical images to rugged and arresting features of the eastern seacoast. Her abstract works reflect a love for music and dance, and the exploration of repeated shapes and light-play.

"I am drawn to textures, patterns, light, repetition, and asymmetry, and to brilliant and subtle color. Rocks and stones have repeatedly captured my attention over many years of driving to the east coast and painting along the shores of Maine. Painting collections of stones - rounded and smoothed by the ocean - is a quiet, almost meditative practice for me. I consider each stone a tiny canvas, and can spend up to an hour on a single stone in a good sized painting. Rock faces offer expanses of subtle plateaus and level shifts, separated and joined by graphic, linear connections. While both are technically static, there is movement, tension, and strength in the compositions," says Maloney.

Maloney has exhibited in a wide variety of solo and group shows including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, The Buffalo History Museum, The Saturn Club, and The Birge Mansion, as well as a variety of local galleries and restaurants. She has been an annual exhibitor at the Artists In Buffalo Holiday Open Studios for more than a decade, and will be a guest instructor at The Burchfield Penney's International Center for Watercolor, Artist Inspiration Series, in March. Her work hangs in corporate and private collections in the United States, Canada, Italy, and Mexico.

Gallery admission is free and the gallery is open during JCC business hours, 7 days a week. For more information visit jccbuffalo.org.
