JACK to Present Emma Sulkowicz in I.D. This October

By:

JACK presents Emma Sulkowicz: I.D., Oct. 20 - 22, 2016.

Performance artist Emma Sulkowicz -- best known for her nine-month endurance performance piece Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight) as a Columbia University student -- hosts I.D., an event with a DJ and cash bar that might resemble a party.

While attendees mingle, drink and dance in JACK's tin-foiled interior, Sulkowicz shares a private conversation with each attendee. Through these interactions, Sulkowicz drives the piece towards a reflection about the "identity" that we choose to share, or not to share, with others.

Performances: Thursday - Saturday, Oct. 20 - 22 at 8 pm at JACK | 505 ½ Waverly Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11238 | C or G train to Clinton-Washington. Tickets $10, in advance at www.jackny.org or cash only at the door. All ages welcome, 21+ to drink. Attendees may not share photos or videos of I.D., either in-person or online. They must use other means--speech, drawing, writing, dance, music, or other artistic media--to communicate their experiences.

Emma Sulkowicz (b. 1992) lives and makes art in her hometown, New York City. She earned a BFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2015 and is studying studio art in the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. She is perhaps best known for her senior thesis at Columbia University -- Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight) -- an endurance performance artwork in which she carried a dorm mattress everywhere on Columbia's campus for as long as she attended the same school as her attacker. Her more recent works include Ceci N'est Pas Un Viol, an Internet-based participatory artwork, and Self-Portrait (Performance With Object), which was her first solo gallery show. Her awards include the National Organization for Women's Woman of Courage Award (2016) and Susan B. Anthony Award (2014), the United States Student Association's National Student Movement Builder of the Year Award (2015), and the Feminist Majority Foundation and Ms. Magazine's Ms. Wonder Award (2015).
