Elysium Theatre will take a nostalgic turn Wednesday, May 17th at Sandgate Town Hall with the screening of two matinee films that form an important historical link between Sandgate and early Brisbane theatre and film:
11:00am - Skippy the Bush Kangaroo
2:00pm - Miranda (1948) B&W
7:30pm - A talk by Dr. Delyse Ryan entitled; "No Rats or Fleas": Brisbane’s First Cremorne Theatre
Followed by: Come Up Smiling (1939) B&W (A rare 1939, 16mm Cinesound Productions film) - Projectionist Don Sutherland
In early 1900s, the best-known theatre in Brisbane was the Cremorne Theatre in Stanley Street. It was bought by John N. McCallum in 1916 & continued to host the most popular vaudeville stars of the day until its demise by fire in 1954. Cremorne House is also an unusual house on Flinders Parade, Sandgate; built around 1920 & named ‘Cremorne’ after McCallum’s well-known theatre in Stanley Street. John Neil McCallum Jnr. was born on 14 March 1918. He achieved local & international recognition as an actor, producer, director & screenwriter. McCallum married Googie Withers in January 1948 & made a half-dozen more films together in England, including the popular mermaid comedy Miranda (1948), a film about a beautiful & playful mermaid.
Dr. Delyse Ryan, is a Senior Lecturer in Drama at the Australian Catholic University. She says, “The Cremorne (Theatre) was a socially important theatre in Brisbane because it was one of the few places that offered a live theatrical product at a time when cinema was forcing the industry into decline.”
