After the nonstop joy parade that was last season’s The Magic Flute, South Africa’s world-renowned Isango Ensemble returns to Boston with two new reimagined opera classics: uCarmen and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Based on their award-winning film U-Carmen eKhayelitsha, uCarmen is an artistic triumph that transports us to a modern South African township to follow the story of a strong, independent woman who will not be tamed. Packed with transcendent music, passion and romance, uCarmen vividly recreates Bizet’s opera in a way that can only be described as “pure Isango.” A new production to Isango’s repertoire, A Midsummer Night’s Dream weaves the text of Shakespeare’s famous play into Benjamin Britten’s opera and indigenous South African music and dance. A story of enchantment, Isango’s Midsummer transforms the traditional play into a familiar yet surreal night of magic, love and music.
