Shubert Foundation Awards Barrington Stage $70K in Support of 2017 Season ImageBarrington Stage Company (BSC), the award-winning theatre in Downtown Pittsfield, under the leadership of Artistic Director JuliAnne Boyd, is pleased to announce it is the recipient of a $70,000 grant from The Shubert Foundation. The Shubert Foundation's 2016 Grants Program awarded a record-breaking total of $26.8 million to 533 not-for-profit performing arts organizations across the United States.

The 2017 grants mark the 35th consecutive year that the Foundation has increased its giving. Granted in the category of Theatre, the award will support Barrington Stage Company's 2017 season. "We are thrilled to receive a Shubert Foundation grant once again this year;" said JuliAnne Boyd, "It is an honor to be recognized by one of the greatest theatre granting foundations in the country."

Since the establishment of the Shubert Foundation grants program in 1977, over $413 million has been awarded to not-for-profit arts organizations throughout the United States. Ranging from $10,000-$325,000, the grants benefit a broad spectrum of arts organizations - large to small - that cover a wide range of locations around the country, from urban to rural. The Shubert Foundation is especially interested in providing support to professional resident theatres that develop and produce new American work.

Barrington Stage Company's 2017 season, running from May through October, includes Ragtime, Taking Steps, Company, and Gaslight on the Boyd-Quinson Mainstage; Kunstler, The Birds, Speech & Debate, and This on the St. Germain Stage; as well as numerous special concerts, cabarets, and The Youth Theatre production of Bye, Bye, Birdie. About The Shubert FoundationThe Shubert Foundation, Inc., established in 1945 by Lee and J.J. Shubert, in memory of their brother Sam, is the sole shareholder of The Shubert Organization, Inc. Since its founding in 1900,The Shubert Organization has produced and co-produced hundreds of plays and musicals, both in New York and in cities across the country. Currently, the company owns and operates 17 Broadway theatres and six Off-Broadway venues.

Barrington Stage Company is a professional award-winning Equity regional theatre located in the heart of the Berkshires, in Pittsfield, MA. It was co-founded in 1995 by Artistic Director JuliAnne Boyd and has a three-fold mission: to present top-notch, compelling work; to develop new plays and musicals; and to find fresh, bold ways of bringing new audiences into the theatre-especially young people. Barrington Stage garnered national attention in 2004 when it premiered William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin's musical hit The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee which later transferred to Broadway where it won two Tony Awards. In 2009, Mark St. Germain's Freud's Last Session ran more than ten weeks on Stage 2 and later moved Off Broadway and played for two years. St. Germain's Becoming Dr. Ruth (which premiered at BSC as Dr. Ruth, All the Way in 2012) played Off Broadway at the Westside Theatre in fall 2013. BSC's all-time record-breaking musical, On the Town, was originally produced at BSC in 2013.

In 2014, it opened on Broadway with BSC as a co-producer, where it was nominated for four Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival. In 2016, Barrington Stage swept the? first Annual Berkshire Theatre Awards by winning 20 out of the 25 awards. In 2016, BSC produced three World Premieres; Presto Change-O, Broadway BounTy Hunter, and American Son, which won the Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play.
