A modern romantic comedy about a husband, a wife and his dog.
Greg might have brought home a red sports car, but instead he's brought home Sylvia. Sylvia is the sassy, street-wise mutt he picked up in Central Park one afternoon when he wasn't at work. When he adoringly brings her home, his wife Kate is appalled. She doesn't want a dog, she wants freedom-their kids are at college and it's finally her turn. She resents Greg's infatuation almost as much as she resents the fact that, in Sylvia's eyes, Greg isn't just perfect, he's God.

Characters:
SYLVIA: 18-30 age range, energetic, well-meaning, troublesome, adoring-a dog in human form
Greg: 40's-50's age range, a man in a mid-life crisis
KATE: 40's-50's age range,a woman who's moved from the suburbs to the city to focus on her own life and career now that the kids are grown
TOM/PHYLLIS/LESLIE: 40's-50's age range, Three very different characters preferably played by one actor (either male or female). Tom is the obsessed neighbor at the dog park, Phyllis is the cocktail-swilling friend whom Kate confides in, and Leslie is the aggressively androgynous marriage counselor whose office they end up in.

Actors are welcome to audition for both SYLVIA and DARWIN IN MALIBU as rehearsal periods and performance dates won't overlap.

The afterlife's a beach -- Darwin in Malibu: A comedy about philosophy, evolution, horoscopes and pulp fiction.

Charles Darwin -- the Charles Darwin -- is sunbathing through eternity with a view of the Pacific and a girl named Sarah. His peace is rudely disturbed when his friend Thomas Huxley washes up on the beach closely followed by the Bishop of Oxford. The Bishop has decided that the only possible reason that he is not in heaven -- that none of them are in heaven -- must be Charles Darwin, his great failure. The Bishop reasons his one route to heaven is to bring Darwin back to God. And Darwin, Sarah and Huxley find themselves entangled in an enthralling and thought-provoking comedy about God, science and life on the beach.

Characters:
CHARLES DARWIN: 60's, the scientist: evolved, philosophic, relaxed and curious. An old man with a beard who looks like God.
SARAH: 20's, a Californian girl
THOMAS HUXLEY: 40's+ Younger than Darwin; academic and skeptic, dry and very funny. The man who called himself "Darwin's Bulldog" and coined the term "agnostic".
WILBERFORCE, the Bishop of Oxford: 60's, about Darwin's age, but much, much more Victorian.
Surprisingly good-natured.

Actors are welcome to audition for both SYLVIA and DARWIN IN MALIBU as rehearsal periods and performance dates won't overlap.
